Trout Canyon

Trout Canyon 2 weeks, 1 day ago #62507

I was wondering if anyone has completed the caches along Trout Canyon between Pahrump and Vegas?

I was thinking about starting at The Three Stooges (GC1VCFY), driving up to More-Cache-Per-Gallon (GCVW3B), and then hiking up to Would You Please be our Friend (GC1355A).

I am curious about the road conditions up to More-Cache-Per-Gallon (I have an F250 Diesel) and if the weather will be too cold to do the hike Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

It’s been awhile, but the road was very good when we did it in ’06. We had a long bed, crew cab F550 then and had no trouble with the road at all. Of course, we did it in August, so no snow to worry about. Don’t know if there is any there now. That road tops out at about 6800′ if you go all the way through.

I think I did that in a compact rental car. I did scrape once or twice, but if I was driving more carefully I may not have. As long as it is dry you should have no trouble with the drive. It connects up to Lovell Canyon rd, which is paved.

The loop from 160 back to 160 is a nice day trip.

The Trout Canyon road off Highway 160 near Pahrump is a well maintained gravel road and is marked with a sign. It will go all the way into Trout Canyon and there is a little community there. The turn off to Lovell Canyon is around the More Cache Per Gallon cache. I drove that road to Lovell Canyon last July and it was in very good condition. I think it is called the Lovell Summit Road. You should have no trouble driving all the way to the paved road in Lovell Canyon and then completing the loop back to Highway 160 on the paved section.

Hiking weather during the week of Thanksgiving should be OK, but it is possible to get some bad weather. It will be colder in the Lovell Canyon area than in Las Vegas. You can drive all the way to the Will You Be My Friend Cache if you want to. There are several caches along the Lovell Summit Road and most are close to the road. A few of them require a short hike.

I would also suggest Carpenter Canyon Caches while you are in the area, BUT you would need a bit more than a sedan to get in there. the last bit is up a running stream bed and is a great area to explore.

We drove it today. High clearance would be good. 4WD good, but probably not necessary unless weather dictates. There are patches of snow on the side of the road. And you have to cross a few substantial wash areas that I would not want to be near when there’s rain in the area.

We got a relatively late start and ran out of daylight.

Thanks everyone for the information. I am hoping to get those caches on Friday or Saturday depending on the weather.
