TOPIC: Local law enforcement

Local law enforcement 2 years ago #58761

So, this has come up in the geocaching.com forums quite a bit recently (Could be normal and I'm too new to know any better). There seems to be a concern about law enforcement reaction to geocaching. My question is this; What does LVMPD (Metro) think? Do they even know that we exsist? Are there any Metro officers that cache? Has anybody had any really bad run-ins with local law enforcement? (Wow, guess that's more then one question.) I've seen some post snippets on these forums about minor issues but no conversation. Personally I got an inquisitive double drive-by by a metro car recently while searching, but I've really had problems with private security.

I was at a cach last month and was getting ready to put it back when a total of 4 motorcycle cops pulled up right where the hide was. I waited for them to leave and they waited for me to leave, I called "uncle" first. I asked to to move the bikes, put the hide back and told them about geo caching. They said that they would leave it there. I hope.

I think we all have had run ins. Myself have been pulled over once and come up on by police atleast 5 times. All have been real nice. I found Henderson police to be the nicest. Heard bad stories about school district police so try to avoid them at all cost. There is a topic of marking your caches and making wise choices in containers. I was thinking of adding those tini stickers to caches that i find that are hidden good in a urban setting or close to urban stuff. Don't think anyone would complain, making sure not to cover anything important.

I haveo nly had a run in once. Just off the I-15. He wanted to check me out, becuse there had been several stolen rental cars torched in the area. I was in a rental car. Once I said I was Geocaching the light came on, and he asked be about what I find in caches. Took like three minutes, didn't even ask for ID.

I figure people have had a few run-ins. Nobody has met any caching cops though? I would be interested to talk to them more about what the local departments know about the subject.

I have had about a dozen encounters. All turned out good. I have even had them shine their lights to assist in searching.

Then there was the county Sheriff near Lake Tahoe

I find the Henderson Police department to be the rudest. I got pulled over once while geocaching and they did a full blown field sobriety test on me. Luckly I had studied for the test and passed with 100%.

That is something new drunk caching...seriouly what were the signs they were seeing to think you were DUI? Ok possibly slow driving, maybe the sudden turns, possibly standing behind a pine trees trying not to be noticed.....Crap this describes all the urban caching we have done!

I know of a married couple that are both Henderson PD that cache. They are not real active but the do go out from time to time. As far as a cop being an A**, you get those in every profession. You just forget about the rude clerk at the store or the waitress the can get anything right. Everyone remembers the cop that was a jerk. And you have to admit everything we do when caching looks suspicious.

I was realizing that I wasn't gonna get much caching in this weekend (Hoping for golf on saturday, Super bowl on sunday). Then I just thought I'd go after the game. Might be a good time to try out this "drunk caching". I'll be sure not to do it in Henderson though. Those guys never seem to be alone. You always see the Henderson cop driving down the street, and then the three more behind them.

In reality, caching while intoxicated sounds like a really bad idea. I could see caches left out, crowds of people watching, and logs with cute women's phone numbers written on them...
