TOPIC: The Phantom's Demise (GCG9TX)

The Phantom's Demise (GCG9TX) 2 years ago #58664

I really like this idea that Paul (PhantomWSO) posted on the meet up site Ideas for Meetups. Me being in the AF for 10 years and a Munitions troop, (from 1984-1994) I built some of the munitions that were loaded on these birds, it always hit us AMMO troops pretty hard when we hear about any aircraft going down as we often knew the load crews and even the pilots that flew the aircraft.

What date looks like a good day to go after this Cache?

Dry weather would be best so we don't tear up the roads anymore than they already are. If you know the alternate route this is drive-up cache in something like my F-150, my '04 Explorer could not make it even close. The road in the discription is washed-out big time.

Also, It's cold up there right now right? Maybe a late March date...so it is warmer?

But I am in! I want to go.

I know I cant do the hike, but if there is any extra room at the time of the time of the run, I would really like to go

There is plenty of snow up there right now.

If you can get out to Alamo or Rachel the day of the run, I can get you up the hill even if I have to make more than one trip up & back.

Ok I think I am ready to schedule this.....however since this is PhantomWSO's "Goal cache" I want to be sure that it's a good date for him. I am good for the weekend of March 13 -14, 2010. I would also like to confirm that date with NVTriker, since he is the local expert on the area.

Is the plan below good for dates and locations? Who would like to go (for carpooling purposes etc)

From the proposal thread: www.nevadageocaching.com/index.php?optio...atid=12&id=58697

Ok I have been looking at my calender and the weekend of March 13-14, 2010 is saying, make a road trip before it's to late (my work schedule heats up after that).

I am proposing a Las Vegas to Tonopah loop. Leave early Saturday Morning (Between 6-7am) then head up the US 93 (straght throught) to Alamo. There we can stop for pottie, food, refils etc and start caching. I know that we will not pick the area clean, but we can get a nice start. Of course if anyone has "special needs" caches on there list we can grab em!

Our route would head through Alamo, Ash Springs, and on to the ET Highway NV 375 N through Rachel, NV and up to US 6 W. Then mosie over to Tonopah,NV for the overnight stop. The next morning up early for a departure between 6-7 am. Then we can head over for a loop though Silver Peak (if we want) and then down the US 95 S. Some stops/side trips we could opt for are Lida/Dyer, GC16T3R Crossed Legs, Rhyolite, and the Big Dune! Probaly after Amargosa, we will drive straigh through to Las Vegas...of course this is dependant on the "special needs" list and how much daylight we burn!

I would want to split the gas (it's a V6 not a V8!). I could possibly room with a second person, it all depends. Anyone intrested?

Could this be the run for the The Phantom's Demise (GCG9TX)?
Please note: although no board code and smiley buttons are shown, they are still usable.

I plan to be available this weekend. I would like to see people who can not make both days still come out for Saturday. Weather could still be an issue.

Re:The Phantom's Demise (GCG9TX) 2 years ago #58797

March 13 is still a ways out for me when it comes to geocaching planning. Right now it seems like as good a date as any. However, I do not think that I would do the Tonopah part of the trip, so I would be returning to Las Vegas Saturday night.
